my son fell and hit the back of his head earlier today. about an hour and a half later he had a slow nose bleed for a couple of minutes. should we take him to the emergency room?

Yes: Err on the side of caution. Needs an exam to rule out concussion as well as other types of more subtle injuries. Nosebleed may be unrelated but if not may indicate more severe trauma than you realize. Best to get baseline evaluation.

I wouldn't: @10mo his nose is more cartilage than bone. A visit to an Er where there are gunshot wounds/heart attacks &amp; too many diseases to mention would  not be wise or needed. Let his doc see him in the next day or 2 .

BRAAING?: Sorry but what is braaing? Pinch your nose and tip your head back. Make sure you are not taking excess aspirin or other blood thinking medications. See a doctor if it does not stop.

Abnormal platelets: Aspirin effects the ability of platelets to function as the "glue to an initial event, trauma to nose. Discontinuing the Aspirin may help.

Talk with primary Dr: Nosebleeds can be due to many things that cause one of the little veins on the inside of the nose (usually the middle septum) to crack and leak temporarily. Heavy breathing in sports, hot or cold air, allergies, nose-picking, colds, a toy in the nose, etc... are some of the causes. She who bleeds "too often" or "too long" can have her blood checked to see if her blood clots too slowly.

Nosebleed: Nosebleeds occur due to breakdown of lining of nose. Often recurrent. See an ENt doc. You may need nasal cautery.
