Back pain from cough: Your lungs fill your chest cavity .When you cough, you take  a deep breath in, then the vocal cords close.  This causes a rapid increase in pressure within the chest cavity by contracting the muscles between the ribs and the diaphragm muscles. Then the vocal cords open to let the air out rapidly.  The high pressure in the chest as well as the contraction of the muscles cause the back pain.

Many things: Sometimes benign acute back pain can cause problems like this. It just happens, but often will improve with simple measures like over the counter pain relievers, heat or cold packs, gentle exercise and time. If it does not show improvement over a week or so, see your primary provider to check for a more serious problem.

Stress: Coughing and sneezing is an involuntary valsalva effect...Causing muscles that may be strained in the past to contact and  this causes further strain..These muscle contractions can also briefly and forcefully impinge nerves which results in pain....Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong...It would be a good idea to see your family doc for a check-up and discussion of this problem.

Muscle strain: It seems you have strained a trapezius muscle, pain is worse on movement, coughing, sneezing, and at night. Ice, massage and stretching with otc pain meds help. More you move your neck and back although gently faster it gets better.

Diaphragm pain: Irritation of the diaphragm from abdominal or chest can be referred toor felt in the  shoulder. That is the muscle that expands the chest when you breathe. Coughing can be due to allergies, some medications, reflux, viral or bacterial illness among other things. I hope.

Yes: you can strain a muscle or even break a rib coughing. Sometimes you can have pain related to pneumonia as well though so if pain is significant it may be a good idea of have a chest x-ray taken.
