my boyfriend had been feeling a bit nauseous with decreased appetite for a few days, but felt better yesterday, so i saw him. no vomiting or diarrhea. is it likely he had a virus or something contagious? im nervous to get sick?

Accepted Answer

: Always a possibility aside from indigestion. If no longer symptomatic there is a good possibility that he was no longer contagious at the time you saw him.

do kids get sick more often during the terrible twos?

Accepted Answer

No: As far as i know there is no evidence to support any notable increase in 'sick' children(viral or bacterial infections) during the "terrible two's".  This period of increased misbehaving is actually normal as the young child begins to test his or her boundaries; as well as the parents' patience.  Just continuing to be understanding, reassuring, and supportive will get you through.

why do children and the elderly get sick more often than teenagers and middle-aged adults?

Waxing &amp; waning: In children, their immune system is still developing, such that they haven't reached their peak potential yet and thus are at increase risk for infections. That's why we also have more vaccinations scheduled in early childhood. As we get past middle-age, our immune system wanes and increases similar risk for infections.

Reactions: It may be a physiologic reaction to something that is upsetting to them.  To some it renders no reaction - but to others it may instill fear or seem horrific.

No: Latent TB has no clinical consequences as long as it remains latent.

Variables: Infants tend to be well protected from illness in the first 8-12 wks by immunity passed in pregnancy from the mother. As that fades, babies /kids/adults get exposed to a variety of bacteria, viruses, parasites based  on lifestyle, hygiene & chance.Kids that are well rested & fed show their peak resistance to illness.Some are more or less ill based on a combo of genetics & exposures.

Not necessarily: Although leaking poo is a gross issue, I have not seen an issue of related illness in three decades of following these patients.Their biggest issues seem to come with the sadness of being different until they can gain empowerment thru treatment. Recurrence over many years is common, and sporatic  (viral or other) diarrheal illnesses frustrate everyone involved but long term sucess is possible.

can exercise harm my immune system? if i start exercising more frequently will i get sick more often?

Accepted Answer

Moderation: Most things don't turn out well when done in extremes and thus moderation is the key.  Extreme exercises can indeed impair your immune system as in marathoners who suffer from more colds.  However exercising for up to 4 hours a week is good for your health. A recent report found that those around age 30 who exercised more than 5 hours a week was at a higher risk for atrial fibrillation.

as a rare side effect, can spironolactone 100 mg daily cause leukopenia and is it serious? i feel i get sick more often & take longer to get well.

Yes: and it can be serious, kindly report that to your doctor, to stop the drug if it is the case, a simple blood count can rule it out, as it is still rare, but you would be much sicker if it happens, wish you well

Unsure: You don't say how long ago your sepsis episode was, but sepsis is a serious assault to the system.  It taxes your immune system.  It can take a long time to rebound from that.  It doesn't surprise me that you have increased vulnerability to colds, etc.  Concentrate on maximizing your health with good nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular exercise.
