It's viral: Neat experiments showed that most people had acute ebstein-barr infections (the offical name for mono) by the time they're 4 years old.  So the few who don't, get mono later.   Mono virus sometimes causes "clinical" infections - ones that have symptoms, and sometimes result in "subclinical" infections that don't have any obvious symptoms.  Both kinds can lead to immunity so you don't get it again.

Got EBV as a child?: In many parts of the world, children catch ebv virus when they are still young. At that age, they get mild flu-like symptoms for a few days, and then are well again (they usually do not get a "mono" illness). Because their bodies already carry ebv virus, when they become teens or adults and kiss other people with ebv virus, they do not catch another ebv disease from the other people.

Yes: Mono is a pattern infection responsible for the appearance a mononuclear  white cells in excessive numbers.There are several potential germs that cause it, 80% as the E. B. virus. The germ does not care if you have a spleen or not when you get it.

Yes: Many people will get this in childhood as a simple flu like illness and never be sick enough to seek care. If an adult is not immune, they can get it and usually have a more intense experience with it. Often they can be quite ill for up to 3 weeks and a few are ill for 3 months.

Once : Once a patient has had mono, they will always test positive for the virus.  In general, patients only get true mono one time, but if the patient is very "run-down", or susceptible from physical stressors, the virus can re-activate and cause mono symptoms and can also be contagious again.

More than one cause: Traditional mononucleosis describes a flu like illness with fever, swollen glands & the appearance of monocytes ( a white blood cell type) in the blood. About 90% of cases are caused by the eb virus, a member of the herpes virus family.Once  experienced, immunity should be lifelong. Other agents like  CMV virus, toxoplasma gondii, & adeno virus can cause a similar illness.

Mono: Mono is a virus like so many others you or your child may get. The classic image of mono as the " kissing disease" is simply not true- children of any age can get mono. My own daughter got it at 4 years.

Yes: Mono is caused by the ebv virus. Once a person catches ebv, it seems to stay in one's body, and can re-activate to cause mono-like symptoms more than once. Staying healthy & happy, eating a balanced diet, and getting reasonable exercise, etc... May help keep one's immune system in top shape, to keep the ebv virus suppressed. Occasionally, other germs can cause a "mono-like" illness.

Varies: The predominant cause of 80+% of mono is the eb virus and you develop lifelong immunity. It can reactivate, but rarely does. There are other illnesses that produce a mono syndrome, cmv, rubella, hepatitis, toxoplasmosis and others. Since there are other potential causes, it is hard to say specifically how often one can have mono.
