Dilated pupils: Youi have been asleep and the pupils are dilated.  When you awaken, large amounts of light enter the eye and the eye reacts to close down the size of the pupils.  There may be spasm of the muscles doing this and thus pain.  This is just like having your eyes dilated at the doctors office and going out in the bright light.  It is a protective mechanism we have.

Dryness: Often eyes dry during sleep. Usually our protective secretions aid the ocular surface from drying out, but sometimes not always effective. Poor sleep, some medications (decongestants, antihistamines), partial eyelid opening (lagophthalmos), room airflow, all may exacerbate dryness and irritation. Try a gel-based artificial tear prior to bedtime to see if symptoms improve.

Glasses!: You could try sunglasses, artificial tears, oral omega 3's, and or a hat.  Could be partially due to dry eyes. It may also be related to your anatomy and or genetics.

Seek care: Eye pain with an eye discharge could be early infection. If you are wearing contact lenses, remove ; seek treatment. I would recommend an evaluation to assess cause of problem which would then dictate proper therapy.
