Inadequate fluid: Infant dehydration occurs when fluid losses are greater than fluid intake.  Fluid losses occur from bowel movements, which tend to be more liquid in infants; from skin, either by visible perspiration or invisible losses of water through skin pores, especially from heat; from vomiting or regurgitation; and then from any urine the baby passes.  Fluid intake must at least match all these losses.

my infant is showing signs of dehydration. when do i call the doctor? my baby has been ill and is having fewer wet diapers than normal. ive tried to give her pedialyte, but she isnt taking much of it. at what point do i need to call her pediatrician?

You : You should call your child's doctor if you see any signs of dehydration.  These signs are:

- dry mouth
-few or no tears when crying
-excessive fussiness
-fewer than 3-4 wet diapers/day
-no urination in 6-8 hours
-sunken soft spot
-dry, wrinkled or doughy skin
-appears weak or limp
-decreased alertness or increased sleepiness
-rapid breathing or fast heart rate

Not enough water in,: Too much out, or both.  Can happen with diarrhea, vomiting, diabetes, overheating, overexertion, fever, or just plain not drinking enough.

how do you know when a 9 month baby is dehydrated?

Accepted Answer

Several ways: Dehydration can be determined best when you have a recent weight to compare to, but the signs on the baby are decreased tears or no tears, decreased saliva to the point of stickiness of the saliva (thick, tacky) , decreased skin turgor, sunken eyes and soft spot and lastly decreased urination.

39 weeks, not dehydrated and have eatin all day, and have felt the baby move since 8am its now 4pm. should i be concerned and call the doctor?

Yes, call.: If you have not felt the baby move for the past 8 hours, then call your doctor right away. You should get a nonstress test (nst) at the labor unit.

my 3 month old baby has diarrhea since yesterday.  she has been sleeping a lot today . can she be dehydrated and how much pedialite can i give her?

Diarrhea: Diarrhea in a 3 month old is tricky.  At 3 months, I recommend her usual feeds - formula or breastmilk, which can be offered at other times, more frequently.  If she cannot take in her usual diet, is making fewer wet diapers (urine) than usual or is sleeping a lot, please seek medical attention.

im 10 wks pregnant and struggle to drink water. i feel dehydrated. im worried not enough amniotic fluid for baby lead to deformities. is this true?

Some basics: Reproduction is designed to prefer baby over you. As part of that process the developing fetus is selectively given what they need even it it draws away from you.The amniotic fluid is partly derived from pee the baby makes. As long as all the parts are connected they will make it in adequate amounts, whether you are on the dry side or not. You worry about staying healthy for you, baby will be fine

No but falling and: dehydration can hurt you.  The most important action you can take to protect your baby when you do get pregnant is to take care of yourself.  I strongly recommend dequate fluid intake, prenatal vitamins and a visit to your doctor to find out why you passed out.  Best wishes.  Dr. Anne

the diarrhea goes from heavy to very light.i am concerned that she is will become dehydrated.. what can i give her? please

Monitor temperature: Provide a clear infant electrolyte solution for one day, if she is formula fed. A soy formula may be used after 24 hours to help digestion. Offer applesauce, bananas and rice cereal to improve her symptoms. If you are nursing, continue to nurse and please follow up with your PCP. Watch for signs of dehydration, such as fewer wet diapers or weight loss,

my sister in law's baby died in utero around 16w. no amniotic fluid but she didn't have leaking. they said fetus was dehydrated. how so? kidney issue?

Could be: Amniotic fluid includes urine made by the fetus during pregnancy.Those that have poorly formed or no kidneys or a severe blockage to their urine outflow, will not create enough amniotic fluid. The fetus remains so tightly shrinked wrapped, that they also can have poor lung growth (no room).These can survive pregnancy but die soon after birth. A loss early in pregnancy may indicate another issue.
