You have PIH: It sounds like you have post-inflammatory hyper -pigmentation.  Try to minimize any inflammation such as pimples.  Gentle cleansing, use of benzoyl peroxide products, plenty of sleep and a good diet and exercise will help you keep pimples under control.  If you get one, do not squeeze it!  you might want to consult a dermatologist for help in control and fading these spots.

You : You generally need 3-5 ipl treatments to lighten dark sun spots on your face.  The light from the ipl is fired at the spot causing the light energy to be absorbed by the pigment in the spot.  The spot will then darken, freckle, and flake off over the next few days.  
One treatment will lighten the spot somewhat, but usually another few treatment 2-3 weeks apart will maximize your results.

Probably not.: Retin A (tretinoin) is helpful for the acne, but can actually contribute to "post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation" ( dark spots following acne) to some degree.   You can add in topical 4% hydroquinone cream as a mild bleaching agent to be used nightly on the hyper-pigmented areas to gradually lighten them up.

Several options: First you need to have it looked at to make sure it is not anything suspicious for cancer. If it is hyperpigmentation topical hydroquinone/tretinoi (triluma) works well. Chemical peel or ipl (intense pulse light) works well also.
