i am experiencing  nausea, moderate. been nauseous for a week, getting period next week. is that normal to have nausea for a week before period?

Nausea: There are many causes of nausea. Most are caused by the gastrointestinal system. If this is not something that typically occurs for you with every cycle then it is probably not related to your period. If you think you might be pregnant check then check a home pregnancy test. They are cheap, reliable and available  at any pharmacy.

Prostaglandins: Most likely prostaglandins (pg, ) which are derivatives of arachidonic acid. Pg cause menstrual cramps, and can be associated with nausea, diarrhea, and mild temperature elevations - among other things. Pg rises dramatically before menstruation and peaks during your period.  Otc drugs like Ibuprofen block pg; you might find it helps with your nausea.

Possibly: These premenstrual symptoms may be due to fluid retention caused by hormonal changes occurring several days before your period. Salt restriction and/ or use of a mild diuretic during that time frame may obviate your symptoms, but your gynecologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you about this matter.

Probably not.: Nausea of pregnancy generally won't occur until a period is late.  Spotting before a period is not usually a sign of pregnancy.  Rather a missed period is usually the first sign of pregnancy.  Time will tell, plus a pregnancy test if the period is missed.

Pregnancy unlikely: Since you had a period after sex, you are unlikely to be pregnant. Pull out is not a reliable method of contraception. Conception, as defined by the generation of a fertilized ovum, occurs within day or so of the sex. However, it takes about 2-3 weeks for the embryo to make enough HCG to produce a positive pregnancy test. Blood test may be done a day after a missed period. Home pregnancy tests should be done 4-5 days after the missed period. If the result is negative repeat the test in 4-5 days. Use first morning urine and follow instructions for the test carefully. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time, every time. You may consider implanted contraceptive, or IUD. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Nausea: Nausea is common in many conditions including but not limited to the ones that you mentioned like pregnancy, stress etc. In order to get a correct diagnosis it's important that you see your doctor and get some tests done. Please continue to stay well hydrated as well.

Lots of options: You will need to see your obgyn for an exam and testing. Depending on your age and fertility plans there are lots of treatment options.  Birth control pills can regulate your cycle. Mirena (levonorgestrel) iuds can minimize your periods. Lysteda is a great new hormone free drug used to stop heavy periods. If you are done with  pregnancies ask if you are a candidate for an endometrial ablation.

PMS: Pms can cause multiple symptoms. From mood changes, pain, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, irritability etc. You should make a 3 month diary of your symptoms to have a proper diagnosis. There are multiple therapies for pms ( hormonal, non hormonal, vitamins, excersie, diet etc). Talk to your obgyn to discuss treatment options most convenient for you.
