Blockage of bile: They can block bile from exiting the liver. This prevents the liver from getting rid of bilirubin, which is bright yellow in color, and builds up in th eblood and stains skin and eye sclerae - this is what's known as jaundice.

: Jaundice is just the visible effect of an abundance of that material in the tissues. It should gradually clear over time with no long term effect on the liver or other tissues where it stored transiently.

Liver Blockage: On occasion, gallstones may exit the gallbladder and get stuck in the tube that connects the liver to the intestinal tract, called the bile duct.  Obstruction of the bile duct may impair liver function, leading to jaundice and abnormal elevation of the liver enzymes.  Stones in the bile duct can be much more serious than gallbladder stones and should be addressed urgently.

Obstructive: Gallstones that pass from the gallbladder into the bile duct can cause obstructive jaundice. Often the gallstones will pass through on their own, others need to be removed by ERCP procedure with a gastroenterologist.

Not likely...: Pruritis - or itchy skin - is not a typical symptom of gallstones.  It can be, however, an occult sign of liver disease so you should see your doctor with these complaints and get your liver checked.  Good luck!
