why did i wake up with bright green tongue?

Accepted Answer

Something external: Check to see what you may have eaten or drank at bedtime last night, including toothpaste or mouthwash.  These can have an effect, especially if you are a mouth breather and have dried it to your tongue.  If there is no obvious cause of the "green", you should have your dentist check it out.

Aphthous ulcer: Likely an aphthous ulcer (canker sore). Self limited. Treat with OTC meds, saline rinse, avoid spicy foods. Should resolve within a week. If not, see oral surgeon.

a few days a month i wake up with a very sore tongue, white patches, reddish. this has been going on for over a year now but is infrequent. it affects my taste. usually it goes away in the afternoon. what could this be?

: Many possibilities, one of which is simply mouth breathing at night.  Recommend evaluation by either ENT or oral surgeon to make sure the condition is not in the tongue itself

Swollen taste buds?: Have this examined by your dentist or an oral surgeon. It may be something other than swollen taste buds. It may be an infection. It may require a  biopsy.

what causes biting tongue in sleep. i wake up with bite marks on both sides of tongue. how can i prevent this? i am sleeping/unaware when i do this.

Seizure?: Without actually examining your tongue it is difficult to say exactly the source but the most worrisome cause would be potential nocturnal seizures.  The least worrisome would be scalloping of the sides of the tongue where it appears there are indentations of the back sides of the teeth indicating a large tongue.

i have osa (use cpap) & wake up with horrible pain in my top front teeth from tongue pushing hard against them all night. can this cause root damage?

Needs to be checked: Pain in the teeth may have many causes. The tongue itself can not damage the teeth but this may be a sign of teeth grinding (bruxism) which is quite common in apneic  patients. There also may be an issue with how your CPAP mask is fitting. You should talk to a dentist, preferably one with experience treating sleep apnea patients.

what can cause me to get dry mouth, and wake up with my tongue stuck to roof of my mouth?

Mouth breathing: While sleeping the salivary glands shut down causing dry mouth. Breathing through your mouth can cause an even dryer mouth. If you are conjested, then mouth breathing will increase.

wake up with a coated tongue, gets worse after coffee. i brush and most of it comes off. then after i eat a lolly goes clear only to come back later?

Tongue coating: Tongue coating is generally harmless and can be caused by dryness, harmless mouth bacteria, certain debris in the mouth or digestive factors. Keep hydrated, avoid mouth breathing, brush tongue,try mouth wash.
