: Food cravings for things like ice and dirt can be due to iron deficiency. Try taking oral iron supplement available over the counter, even if you are not anemic.

i have a coworker who had a dizzy spell an fell bumping his head just above his right eye. since the injury he has had an uncontrollable craving for black pepper. is this associated with his fall?

Head injuries: I have seen numerous patients with head injuries, but I have never seen one develop a craving for pepper or any other food or spice as a result of the head trauma. Some patients with certain types of seizures may experience a smell during the seizure,however,but this is different from your friend's craving. A neurologist is best qualified to answer your question.

Probably not: Many pregnant women crave unusual foods.  Hot peppers are not known to harm the baby.  They can cause heart-burn or diarrhea in mom.  In super high doses, they may stimulate uterine contractions.  In many cultures, spicy food is a regular part of mom's diet.  There isn't any rigorous research on the subject but your wife should be fine eating hot pepper more often than normal.  Best wishes!

how can i enjoy pepper sauce & spicy foods without the harsh effects of diarrhea and stomach pains?! i refuse to give up my spicy food cravings!

Find the cause: Millions and millions of people enjoy spice without either stomach pain or diarrhea.  Do you have an ulcer?  Do you have reflux (where stomach acid abnormally comes up into the tube between your stomach and your throat, causing a burn)?  Do you eat the spice in a bowl of greasy, fat filled or fried food, instead of over roasted lean meats or vegetables?  Find the cause to make it better.
