Nasal/sinus anatomy: The conchae are also called turbinates- scrolls of erectile tissue and thin bone that can enlarge from allergy, inflammation, etc. There are 3-4 on each side of the nose. The meatus is a space where sinuses drain; there are 3 of those. The shape of the conchae plus other nearby structures contribute to determine the shape and area of each meatus. All are important in sinus drainage and airflow.
