Usually blood flow: Most u/s images are not done with the 'doppler' probe turned on and are a 'black and white' image. The doppler allows the detection of movements toward or away from the probe (like blood coming into the area in an atery, or leavbing in a vein) these areas are coded red and blue by the computer processing the signal.

Speckle? Not sure.: I am not sure what you are referring to, and without a picture from the sonogram, it is hard to say definitively. Most ultrasound pictures have "speckle" - grains of white &amp; black spots from places of reflection (or no reflection) of the ultrasound waves. Black on a sonogram generally refers to low reflectivity, &amp; can point to free fluid, cysts or fluid-filled structures (bladder, blood vessels).

Talk to Doc: Since there are many types of spots, it is impossible to guess what the problem may be. You will likely get a better answer from the doctor who ordered the PET scan instead of here.

Several posibilities: My major worry would be that you have infective endocarditis, which could be life-threatening.  Very strongly suggest that you consult with an infectious diseases expert asap.  Please do not delay.  There are other things this could be, none of them very good to have.  Please go and get taken care of as soon as you can.

That's on every scan: Every ultrasound scan has white spots and black spots. That's the way they appear. Patience is a virtue. If the doctor says the results can wait until Monday (3 days from now), then one can do other things and think other thoughts until then. If the scan is to diagnose something urgent, such as appendicitis, the doctor wouldn't say it's ok to wait for the results.

Depends for what: Ct is probably the best out of the ones you listed because it gives high spacial resolution and contrast.  Mri would give even better contrast but this is likely not necessary.  Us will show the size of each organ and any large lesions; it does not have associated radiation like ct or nuclear med scan. Nuc med scans typically used for specific purpose only, not general evaluation.

Depends: Are the white spots on the skin of your neck or are the white spots inside your mouth at the back of your throat. Do they hurt? How long have they been there? Do you have any other symptoms?. Does anything make the spots better? Does anything make the spots worse?
