Possible dehydration: Possible dehydration overall to the body.  Try using chap stick.

Ask the surgeon: Depending on what type of surgery you had, and what you mean by exercise, it will vary. The safest information will come from your treating surgeon.

Accepted Answer

Yes: The nose is an air processor. It warms, filters and humidifies the air you breath so that when it gets to your lungs it is clean, warm and moist - just the way the lungs like it. By mouth breathing your lungs have to work harder because the air hasn't been processed.

is there a substantial advantage to nasal breathing and not mouth breathing during moderate/high intensity exercise? or its better but not huge?

Good question.: The only real advantage to nasal breathing is warming cold air and filtering certain particles before they get into throat and lungs.  At a certain point, the volume of air needed during exercise is more than can be delivered by nasal breathing alone.  More important to keep up with oxygen demands as opposed to whether it is nose or mouth.

when i exercise vigorously (sprinting or running for 10 minutes) i get a metallic/bloody taste in my mouth (like i bit my tongue). no blood though. ?

Elevated BP: The metallic taste may be the increase flow of blood through your gum tissue. Vigorous exercise increases the blood pressure. The gum tissue is pink because blood is up so high in the layers of skin. A simple diffusion of lymph or saliva into your mouth may cause that taste.  However i would more suspect a periodontal (gum disease) issue. Get your dental check-up and ask if you have pocketing.

Ask Your Surgeon: TMJ dysfunction can be related to a number of different causes requiring different approaches to treat the cause.  Your best option is to return to the OMS who diagnosed your problem for specific instructions on exercise therapy to treat your problem rather than performing any exercises that could make your problem worse.

NOT USUALLY: Redness in the face, with pallor around the mouth, is normal for some people after exercise. This is the result of increased blood flow to the face in an attempt by the body to cool itself. Usually the body cools itself through sweating, but not everyone has the same number of sweat glands. So, increased flushing may compensate for such reduction. Fyi, it may be exacerbated in rosacea + menopause.

Dry Mouth?: Is it possible that you mouth became dry during your workout? Dry oral tissues have a tendency to feel tender and are more easily irritated. If so, I like a mild over-the-counter rinse called Peroxyl by Colgate. It should help soothe the skin.

Have LPR maybe?: Avoid foods &amp; behavior that delay stomach emptying &amp;/or relax the lower esophageal sphincter--spicy, greasy food, mints, alcohol, tobacco, chocolate, tomato-based products, caffeinated &amp; fizzy drinks, eating before bedtime, exercises. Lose weight. Elevate head of bed on blocks. Can try otc acid blocker for relief (h2's: tagamet, zantac, (ranitidine) pepcid; ppi's: prilosec, prevacid,nexium). Eval if persistent
