Snoring or breathing: For my patients who having trouble breathing through their nose even if they have a deviated septum i recommend they try a medicated nasal spray first. Either a intranasal steroid (flonase) or intranasal anti-histamine (patanase) or both. This might help the difficulty breathing through nose and even snoring. If this doesnt work then they can consider septoplasty and turbinate reduction.

Nasal & sleep apnea: Deviated septums can cause breathing problems. The sleep apnea needs to be diagnosed by a sleep test. Sleep apnea is caused by obstructions or nerological problems. 

With a deviated septum a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine can make you an oral sleep appliance that should help end your snoring and control your sleep apnea.  Look at the aadsm association to find a dntal sleep medicine dds.

Nasal swelling: What you describe could interfere with your sleep. I doubt it would cause sleep apnea. You may want to see an ENT for further evaluation

Septoplasty: If you are noticing nasal blockage, you could consider a surgical procedure called septoplasty. This could relieve the obstruction from the deviated septum.

Deviated septum: Refers to the cartillage that seperates the nasal passages becoming crooked and pushed to one side, often from trauma. This can hamper breathing thru the nose. Treatment is typically septoplasty which invilves the removal of all but an "l"  shaped strut of septum for support. Often done in conjunction with spreader grafts to open airway or other rhinoplasty procedures to shape nose/turbinate.

Nasal Structures: Hello. A deviated septum is a shift in the bone or cartilage or both which can cause a restriction of your breathing pathways through your nose as well as a blockage of the sinus drainage patterns as well. A concha bullosa is a sinus cell that grew into your middle turbinate which also causes an obstruction. These are not cancerous changes and if they cause no problems, then no worries.

Surgery is not 100%: No procedure can be 100 % effective. There are to many variables. However if your breathing difficulty is caused by the deviated septum it should be improved with surgery. Remember there are many causes of poor airway.

No: A deviated septum causes a mechanical blockage of breathing on the side of the deviation.  It is true that the tissue on the opposite side may become enlarged and block the opposite side as well. But post nasal drip and foul breath is more likely a manifestation of other problems in the nose or sinuses.  See an ENT doctor for a more specific diagnosis and treatment.

Sinus: Means you have chronic inflammation of the sinuses and nose and that the wall between the two sides of your nose is bent to one side. Many treatments are helpful including a saline spray and several weeks of a nasal steroid spray. A deviated septum is very common, usually causes a blocked nose and can be treated in surgery

how much does it hurt to repair a deviated nasal septum?

Accepted Answer

Not much : Most of my patients complain of nose soreness rather than pain.  There is some stuffiness and congestion that accompanies the recovery, but there should not be much pain.  I should note that I do not use nasal packing after septoplasty...This was routinely done in years past and that nasal packing was quite painful.  With these newer techniques, recovery is usually mild.
