Separate problems: Nongonococcal urethritis (NGU) and prostatitis are separate problems, although they have overlapping symptoms and often difficult to distinguish from one another. NGU is not known to be a cause of prostatitis, but this is uncertain and controversial. No: We don't call it ngu anymore now that we can test for chlamydia. Chlamydia is a disease of both men and women, but men are more like to develop symptoms of urethritis (urethral symptoms) whereas women can get urethritis or cervicitis (cervical infection).

Here are some ...: Urinalysis with or without urine culture with properly collected urine specimen is to confirm if one's voiding symptoms results from UTI, but usually NGU will not be tested except suspecting STD-related urethritis or vaginitis. Chronic urethritis: Such prolonged, persistent symptoms after multiple antibiotics suggest the possibility of Mycoplasma genitalium; ask doctor about trying moxifloxacin. Or a non STD prostate infection. Also ask about certain parasitic infections, especially schistosomiasis -- heretofore uncommon in Pakistan, but recently increasing. See an infection specialist and/or urologist. Good luck.

: NGU is not a part of signs of acute symptomatic HIV infection.  Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Ureaplasma urealyticum has been implicated as an etiologic agent of NGU.

: The standard tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia are extremely accurate and you can be sure you have neither of them. But this doesn't mean you do not have NGU , which is a separate problem. But if you have no discharge from the penis or painful urination, you can be sure you don't have it. Most cases of NGU are harmless. But see a doctor in person if you remain concerned.

i have frequent and urgent urination. my urine also looks cloudy with swirling going on. 2 uti tests. both negative. ngu negative. any thoughts?

Frequent urination: A male at 28years is unlikely to have significant bladder problems, hence a full urinalysis report and chem profile with osmolality will be helpful in considering diagnosis.

i took doxycyline 200mg for 7 days for an ngu. can this affect my syphilis test, i.e. make it false-negative? when should i test and be sure it is accurate and not affected by doxy, since 7 days of doxy would only be half the treatment for syphilis?

Accepted Answer

: Although 2 weeks of doxycycline is required to cure established syphilis, 1 week is recommended and effective for prevention. If you were exposed to it when you acquired NGU, you can be sure it prevented infection or cured it immediately. Even if that happened, a syphilis blood test will never turn positive so there is no need to test.

some say ureaplasma doesnt cause ngu, if all other normal culture tests were negative (trich, m gen, sti panels , viral tests including rna testing), what else could cause the ngu?? getting a microgendx soon but just wondering what is common?

: NGU results from chlamydia (20-30% of cases) and Mycoplasma genitalium (15-20%); and uncommonly Ureaplasma (maybe), herpes, trichomonas, herpes, other viruses (like adenovirus) (under 5% each). All totaling ~50%. The causes of the other 50% of cases are entirely unknown; research on this has been unsuccessful for several decades. MicroDX has not been studied in NGU, but unlikely to be helpful.
