Point out compulsion: A difficult task, but if you can get the person to realize that they are doing substnces or alcohol at the expense of loved ones or 
doing things they should - like work obligations etc.  You can sometimes get through.  Good luck.

Wouldn't it be great: If we had the ability to convince an addict that they have a real problem and that they need help.  People often don't see what they refuse to see.  I would share your concerns and even offer the addict in your life to take them to a 12 step program. But remember, that you can't control what an addict thinks or does.

They are immortal: Unfortunately this is one more area that teenagers are simply not going to believe the cautionary tale until it happens to them or a friend of theirs. It's like teaching your kids about stranger-danger. They may give the right answers.."ok mom, i won't post pics of me", but do whatever they want when you're not there. Keep at it though, and hopefully the message will stick before they are the tale.

Talk to your doc.: I'd assume your doctor would be working towards an accurate diagnosis as well.  Have a serious talk with your doctor about the progress of your investigations, diagnostic possibilities and future planning.

Very carefully...: Hoarding (popularized on t.V. Lately)is another form of psychiatric disease; although a benign one.  Confronting the individual is problematic; and should be done with respect, love, and a plan.
Collecting a lot of support will be beneficial to the hoarder.

We are used to : A mcdonald's drive through mentality. I want it my way and i want it now!   many people have difficulty delaying gratification. If they exercise or diet they want instant results. They don't want to be bored so they tinker with the internet ; gadgets a lot.  Many americans want a lifestyle that is easy.

Yes: The brain is the most powerful organ in the body.
The reverse is true and people can persuade themselves a placebo is totally effective.
