General vs Specific: The term 'endoscopy' encompasses a great many procedures where a scope (endoscope) of some kind is inserted into some oriface for some purpose (looking through the mouth into the stomach or small intestine, looking through the nose up into the sinuses, etc).  'colonoscopy' specifically refers to inserting a 'colonoscope' into the rectum and viewing the entire colon.

Can be same: A colonoscopy is a form of endoscopy of the colon. There is also an upper endoscopy of the esophagus and stomach. Both use a lighted flexible scope to see the inside lining of the structure being examined.

Direct vision vs. TV: In colonoscopy a scope is passed retrograde up  the colon after cleansing with a bowel prep. Air inflation dilates the bowel to aid visualization.  With the pill camera, the pill or capsule is swallowed and as it passes the pylorus to the small bowel, a TV image is transmitted to a camera and the passage of the pill is video copied to review any findings and visualize any small bowel lesions.

You must: speak to the doctor  or the staff , every one have their own way of bowel prep, if you are not adequately prepared the procedure will be incomplete or will be cancelled. Staff will have written instructions ,eager to give you to get it done right , rather than rescheduling it again. Don't worry you will be fine

when would you use an upper/lower gi series instead of endoscopy/colonoscopy?

Fnctionl vs physical: The UGI can add evidence of the "function" of the GI tract vs. The physical features seen on scope.  One may see evidence of active reflux or watch the process of swallowing and the timing of gastric emptying.  The small bowel follow thru goes beyond where a scope can see giving the doctor info about the small intestine.

Also it may be used in someone too sick to tolerate a scope proceedure.

wife has colitis, colonoscopy removed non cancerous polyps. now doing endoscopy due to pain in stomach & lower rib area. what could it be. thx so much?

Anything: Could be anything, such as gastritis, ulcers, injuries, or costocondritis, etc. Sx are very non-specific. However, it is prudent to perform an egd especially if abd pain persists. Egd is not a screening test in us. In asia country, egd is encouraged because of high risk of gastric ca there. Good luck.

i have a colonoscopy &endoscopy scheduled for thursday . i have been taking xarelto since mid march of this year for 2 tiny blood clots found in lower right leg they told me to stop taking the xarelto 2 days before ! is this safe for the procedures ?

: It's certainly safe to stop any blood thinners before a colonoscopy. Any further concerns should be discussed with your gastroenterologist and your prescribing physician.

1) why do i yawn and burp at the same time? 2) i have noticed that after endoscopy and colonoscopy (10 months ago), whenever i eat food my lower belly sticks out, could it be any reason from that, or could that be a posture issue too, like apt!?

: 1. is probably a coincidence 2 A normal meal should not make the lower belly stick out noticeably. If this persists consult your MD

Sounds like: irritable bowel syndrome.  But this condition is poorly understood.  Ask your GI specialist for treatment suggestions, including diet modification.  There are other less common conditions that can cause abdominal pain, too numerous to cover here.
