Yes,  See your GP.: This could be bruised skin, muscles or cartilage of the ribs, broken/bruised rib(s) themselves, or some abdominal organ, like splenic problem.
See your doctor to get it diagnosed and treated properly.

Something intraabdom: Could be something within your abdomen. See your doctor or a gastroenterologist. Would be best to go when you have the pain. Will likely need some laboratory tests and/or x-rays/imaging studies.

Possible: Left-sided rib tenderness, reproducible on palpation, and positional changes indicates musculoskeletal sources such as intercostal neuritis, costochondritis, rib sprain.   However, other internal conditions can cause referral pain to the same area, such as pleurisy, pericarditis, angina, gastritis, splenic rupture, kidney stone and kidney infection.

Most likely trauma: The most suggestive description is that it hurts to touch it.  And that it hurts to cough suggests pleurisy or inflammation of the lung lining.  This can be anything from a significant contusion to the rib or even a small, non-displaced fracture. If it is slowly getting better, you can watch it. If pain is increasing or difficulty breathing, needs evaluation, your Doc or Urgent Care:)

i've been coughing too much that my left side of the body near the bottom of the rib cage hurts. is this something of a concern?

Not usually: Pain in that location after coughing is usually caused by a strain of the muscles and ligaments used to generate a forceful expiration - i.e. A cough or sneeze. It will usually resolve in a few days with anti-inflammatory medications. If the pain should become unbearable or be accompanied by fever, bloody sputum, or significant shortness of breath you should be checked by a doctor.

Xiphoid process: There is small cartilage at the lower end of the sternum along the midline, is that what you feel?

Mostly rib cage : Most of those are related to ribcage or what we call costochondritis, the best thing to do to go and check it out.

Probably you are ---: Re-injuring it again ; again. It happens all the time, but normally your brain doesn't register it, but when there is a tender spot, even a slightest touch to it, even unintentionally, will make it hurt.
Just be extra careful. 
Pain meds, hot pad, support tape, muscle relaxers ; gentle exercises to strengthen the muscles, us, stretching exercises, will all be helpful.
See pcp, if no better.

i have a lump on my left rib cage at the bottom. it moves when touched, is soft and i only noticed it while lying down. it doesn't hurt.

Lipoma: This sounds like an lipoma, which is a benign fat lump. You may have others, but just to be safe have a doctor have a look at it

reoccurring pain directly under bottom left rib above stomach. doesn't hurt when lying down, only when in an upright position and worse when walking.

Pain under left rib: May be gastritis/ GERD with or without H pylori or  consider gas/stool/rarely lesion polyp in colon (it rides high) . May also be musculoskeletal- rarely if very active spigelian hernia.   Consider ranitidine/ previcid , if not helpful consider CT of abdomen/ or GI follow up. .
