Glaucoma: I think you're quite fortunate. Keep regular appointments with your ophthalmologist to monitor your intraocular pressure. If it is kept normal, your prognosis is excellent.

eye exam (age 36 & no family history of glaucoma) - iop was 21 in both eyes and corneal thickness 550 and 575. gdx test and visual field test"normal". optic nerve also looked healthy on dilated exam. what does this mean in terms of glaucoma risk?

: It appears that your risk is low however I would repeat all testing in 1 year for confirmation of continued normality.

i have optic nerve swelling i haven't been to the doctor in over a year. i still have migraines, tinnitus, eye pain, some visual hallucinations. is this related to the condition? should i schedule a follow-up? i'm very busy with college at the moment?

: As long as you don’t worry about going blind may not need follow up. It would scare the heck out of me.

Partially: When the eye is enucleated, part of the optic nerve is cut and removed with the eye. If the eye is eviscerated, the nerve and the sclera of the eye are left behind after removing the internal contents of the eyeball.

Actually- maybe both: Depends on what you mean when you say "optic nerve damaged" &amp; as importantly what is the resulting disturbance in vision consequent to this damage. In other words, if the nerve is physically damaged such as by trauma then, an ophthalmologist is needed but if a clot causes a stroke in the eye &amp; that's the cause of the damage then, a neurologist is likely  better. Or both might be of value depending

can the optic nerve broken inside the eye be repaired?

No: a "broken" optic nerve will not  regenerate and cannot be repaired.  However, inflammation of the optic nerve which causes visual decline will often improve with treatment or on its own.

is it possible to save an eye from trauma if the optic nerve is intact?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It all depends on the extent of the injury. If the nerve is intact and you have vision in the eye it can be saved, but there may be injury to the globe, muscles, cornea, lens, or retina.  Any significant trauma to eye that would cause such symptoms should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist.
