how functional is a  prosthetic knee?

Fairly good: A total knee does not feel like a normal knee. It does allow normal walking, stair climbing, and low-impact exercise. Running long distances and high impact sports are not generally recommended. Furthermore, certain activities, such as kneeling, may be uncomfortable. If you are a good candidate, a total knee will decrease pain and improve function, but it feels a little different than normal knee.

i have an aka on my left leg sometimes when i walk it pops & cracks and hurts on the outer side of my left knee  in about the middle of the knee that is in the prosthetic other people can hear the cracking it real hurts for just a second  hard  walk?

Reassessment: The obvious response would be that the prosthetic that you’re presently in is not immobilizing you to the point that the doctor hopes. You might need a cast to be placed around your knee and leg to give you greater immobilization to prevent movement the Pain. Report back to your doctor so that he can either adjust what you’re wearing or come up with a different solution

Pregnancy problem : Do you have diabetes type 1 or chronic kidney failure? If yes, pregnancy is possible however many complications can be expected and must be handled by competent Endocrinologist, nephrologist (kidney specialist) and high risk Obstetrician. If you had amputation for other reasons such as complicated fractures or tumor, no chronic medical disease then the should have no problem with the pregnancy.

Routine F/U: Your friend will need routine follow up with the surgeon, oncologist and prosthetic personel.

Orthotics...: The use of braces and splints (orthoses) to support and stabilize parts of one's body affected by paralyzed or weakened muscles can play a vital role in improving your function. See a physiatrist or orthotist for assessment and treatment.

what type of anesthesia is typically used for knee surgery? will i be awake?

No: For knee surgery you will be given general anesthesia. This means that you will be asleep, with a breathing tube down your throat helping you breath during the surgery.

is an mri of the knees required before orthovisc? is this type of injection unbearably painful? can anaesthetics be used?

Accepted Answer

No: Viscosupplementation( orthovisc, synvisc, (hylan g-f 20) etc.)may require approval from your insurance carrier(usually documentation that other treatments such as NSAIDs,PT haven't helped) but generally not an MRI.Most injections are done in the office w/local anesthetics( lidocaine) and/ or ' cold spray' and are easily tolerated.best of luck!

Many reasons: If the knee swells and you are unable to bear weight then you should see a doctor that can evaluate you like a sports medicine or orthopedist. 
The list if possible injuries or reasons is long.

Patellar tendonitis: There are several possibilities that could explain what is going on. These include patellar tendonitis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, patellofemoral syndrome amongst others. It is best to see a Sport medicine or PMR specialist for a thorough evaluation. In the meantime ice and anti-inflammatories as necessary are recommended.

lipoma on knee, several small ones in one area, hard, hurts, growing, there for over a month, what types could this be?

Accepted Answer

Maybe cysts: Small lumps under the skin can represent lipomas or cysts. Neither are dangerous, but can be bothersome. There are no subtypes of lipoma, which is a benign fatty tumor. Hope this helps!
