Same Thing...: The best otc medication (in my opinion) is lotrimin (clotrimazole) ultra. Socks should be a synthetic material like those manufactured by thorlo [http://www.Thorlo.Com/]. Maybe,maybe not: There are certainly plenty of otc powders or sprays that might provide you with relief if that is your problem. If you don't see improvement in a week or two a visit with your doc or podiatrist may be in order.If your pain or discomfort are significant, or you are diabetic, i would see the doc.

Mix n match.: So why not mix the topical anti fungal cream with just a little topical hydro-cortisone cream (otc). This should not only take care of the fungus but also stop the itch.

my husband's doc assessed his hernia repair site swelling and associated it with his athletes foot... is this accurate?

The only connection: I can conjure up would be if he developed a fungal infection to his hernia site, which is pretty rare. If that is the case, he would need oral anti-fungal medicine, but only after a positive fungal culture of the hernia site.  I have to admit, though, this is a stretch.  I like the idea of a second opinion.

Peeling: It is possible that there is some fungal component ( tinea pedis and athlete's foot are the same thing ) , but a sample of the skin should be sent to a lab for culture and identification.  See your podiatrist or a dermatologist .

If the doc said: It wasn't Tinea pedis what did the doc say it was? Wouldn't it be weird to tell you what it's not andnottell you what it is?  If its not fungus, then I don't see the point in the antifugal cream ...so is it just dry skin? Eczema? Was a skin scrapping taking?

Follow your doctor: You have been checked by the doctor and given antifungal cream, use it if does not get better than follow with your doctor.There are many antifungal creams and most are effective for fungal infections of all kind.
