Vicodin caution: vicodin contains hydrocodone, which is opioid, like morpheine, oxycodone, dilaudid, hydro morpheine, codeine, etc.  They can cross the placenta and change the baby's chemistry.  Taken chronically, they can cause opioid dependence in baby.  Back pain in preg is usually mechanical.  Ligaments and muscles are pushed around.  A good osteopath or manually-trained physical therapist can often help.

Studies meticulous.: Assisted reproduction technology has only been widely available for a couple of decades. The risk of birth defects in any normal pregnancy is 2-4%, and art does not appear to affect that significantly, which is why it took a while to tease out a mild increase in certain congenital anomalies with icsi alone (not regular ivf). See: n engl j med 2012;366:1803-13.

Yes: Depending on why one would be lookng, a high resolution, high level ultrasound and a biopsy of tissue in the womb (chorionic villus sampling) along with blood testing can pick up birth defects.  There is much more to consider.  But yes it can be done.

Depends on what kind: "birth defects" can mean something very minor, like a small hernia, or an extra finger, or something that we know will cause a baby to die, like anencephaly.  Doctors look at research about the outcomes of babies with certain birth defects, and talk to the parents about what the likelihood of survival is before making the decision whether or not to resuscitate a baby.

Depends on situation: Every newborn should have a thorough exam at birth looking for transient distortions caused by uterine compression, disruptions from intrauterine events, or abnormalities from whatever cause. If mom was on a specific medication, the  sometimes hidden effects can be specifically looked for by those aware of the possibilities. There is no one test or group of tests.

Hgb A1C: Poorly controlled diabetes correlating to an elevated HGB A1c has been associated with a higher risk of congenital heart defects as well as other birth defects. There is no correlation with genetic abnormalities. Good diabetic control for at least 6 months prior to trying to conceive will achieve the best outcome.

There are currently many medications available for morning sickness that have been well researched and not shown to be associated with birth defects. I don't understand: No. It is unlikely that chlamydia will affect the baby in any way. But, how do you know you have had chlamydia for over a year when you have been sexual in the meantime?

No real change: Available data places this mad in category C risk for pregnancy. In summary, there are no adequate studies in humans that presence or absence of a fetal effect to the point it can be listed in a safer category. Genetic changes from the egg/sperm present at conception are increasingly found in autistic pts, so pregnancy exposure is less a factor. The final issue is having a mom healthy at delivery
