Nothing Specific: Cool bath or compresses over the rash may V pain/ itching. Although there is not a “cure” for shingles- Valacyclovir (Valtrex), Acyclovir (Zovirax) &amp; Famciclovir (Famvir) can help symptoms.  Narcotics (i.e., codeine), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline), anticonvulsants (Neurontin) as well as localized numbing medications can be used for pain.

Yes: Often patients can get relief with Neurontin or Lyrica (pregabalin). These help with neuropathic pain.

No: The severe pain caused by varicella zoster lesions (shingles) is a nueropathically generated.  Caladryl will do little to help.

See a dermatologist: The details matter! Where is it? How long? Are you SURE it is shingles? It is unusual for this to cause significant itch. PAIN is always present, especially at your age. The degree of pain varies. If it is not your face or eyelids you can try a topical cortisone. This diagnosis is frequently made in error by Drs who are not skin specialists.

Calamine lotion: No medicine will clear up shingles. However you can try to put some soothing cream on the area to keep it from being uncomfortable.

Sorry it won't work: If you really have shingles, what you need is an antiviral medicine, not an antibiotic. Sometimes the shingles become infected since they are damaging the top layer of skin-so in that case an antibiotic might help, although I usually like something 'local' such as bacitracin ointment. You should call your doctor for an antiviral medicine-acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir. Hope you feel better

Best treatment is: Oral antiviral meds: shorten course of infection & help prevent nerve pain of untreated shingles. Topical creams containing capsaicin may provide some relief from pain, but this hot-pepper derivative may "burn" or irritate the skin of some people (& should be used with caution to prevent getting in eyes). Topical preps with Benzocaine may help.

Contact your doctor: The doctor who gave you Cyclivex can change it to another (similar) drug from the same class of antiviral drugs. But you need a new prescription to purchase the alternate drug. In the meantime, you can use Loperamide(over the counter) drug to stop your diarrhea.

Yes: Calamine lotion to soothe skin itching and pain. Do not use too much that it caked and is hard to get off. You can also put cool wet cloths on the area. You can put cornstarch or baking soda for rapid healing. To help remove loose crusts, soak them in the tap water. Hope it is helpful.
