colonoscopy: what can i expect?

Not bad: The most annoying part is the bowel cleanout the day before.  You have to drink a fluid that makes you have enough bowel movements until your stool becomes clear.  The colonoscopy procedure itself is usually easy.  When you go home you will have some abdominal discomfort and bloating.  Sometimes you can have a little rectal bleeding as well.

COLONOSCOPY: You can expect to have some form of bowel prep the day before. The day of, you will be given an IV and medications to sedate you. The colonoscopy should take roughly 15-25 minutes to complete depending on findings. You will then wake up and recover (30 minutes or so), and then be discharged home. A relatively safe procedure with few and rare complications.

Information: Colonoscopy provides information about the state of health of your colon.  The only uncomfortable part is the cleansing done the day before which will require regular trips to the bathroom.L  on the day of the procedure you will be sedated and when you wake up there will be no symptoms;  your GI doctor will give you the results.

Lots of diarrhea: There will be some cramping and lots of diarrhea. I like to see the bowel prep looking like "mountain dew" and not "yoo hoo".

Depends: Normal, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, polyps, cancer,  .... 

Most colonoscopies will be normal. The rest in order of decreasing frequency.

Colonoscopy: The worst part is the prep.

In the lab expect them to give you short term anesthesia and you will wake up and not remember anything.  Ask them what they found.

Don't be: A colonoscopy is usually done with mild sedation so you won't feel anything or remember anything. It takes about 20-30 minutes. Yo will need transportation home and the rest of the day off work. Following day back to the normal grind. Day before the procedure is prep day to get your colon clean so that a thorough exam can be performed.

Relax: You should be sedated, so enjoy a great nap. Ypu may feel gassy after the procedure. Enjoy your post procedure meal!

With a good : Bowel prep and barring any other issues, most patients will have a bm within 24-48 hours after a colonoscopy.

Prep is an issue.: The night prior to the study you will take a "prep" orally, which is designed to cause significant diarrhea. Most patient's find this a little unpleasant, bad taste, large volume to drink, on the toilet all night, cramps. On the day of the procedure an IV for sedation, the procedure can be painful, depends on how easy the scope advances through the colon. Someone should drive you home.
