Get a Mammogram: It's hard to determine exact cause. It may be due to your hormonal changes during menopause, or die to large breasts. Besides being examined soon you also need to get a mammogram or even a sonogram to help determine possible causes.

HRT: Using extra estrogen after menopause causes the breasts to remain fuller than if you didn't take the estrogen premarin (conjugated estrogens). Some women experience increased breast size after menopause whether they use extra estrogen or not, especially if they have weight gain.

Damiana, menopause: Damiana has been widely used, and is reportedly useful for a number of conditions, including imbalanced female hormones.  Many women have reported reduction in night sweats and vaginal dryness associated with menopause.  It is best taken as a tincture.   Black Cohosh is another consideration, but use should be limited to short periods of time due to the potential for liver damage.

Yes: In the months/yrs leading up to menopause (the end of menstrual periods) our hormones fluctuate to higher highs and lower lows than they did when we were younger. These surges of estrogen can cause breast fullness and tenderness. Seek medical care if pain persists past a few days each month, or if pain is one sided. Get mammograms as recommended (yearly after age 40).

Great Question!: ...Unfortunately, not so great answer.  We know that breast cancer incidence increases with age but we don't know why.  We believe that cancer occurs when a cell is unable to correct a defect in its dna--perhaps this ability is diminished as we age, or the long-term effects of the "toxins" that contribute to breast cancer development are cumulative in nature.

Common problem: Fibrocystic disease/changes is very common after menopause.  Breasts feel lumpy and painful which is caused by cyst formation (fluid filled areas) due to hormonal changes.  Some women may have these changes without being on their menstrual cycle.  Caffeine may cause the cysts to be overactive resulting in pain. This is not related to cancer.
