Give it time: You can expect some change in your menstrual flow after switching from tampoons to pads. If no period bleeding is appreciated after 5-7  days, check urine to rule out pregnancy. Good luck

The GYN doctor: will take a look and see if there is any surgical  procedure necessary or available to help you with your problem. First tampon try: Tampons can easily be inserted around and through even a virginal hymen with care. Try lubricating the end of the tampon with a water soluble gel like K-Y and then place a leg up on a chair or toilet seat. Find the vaginal opening, then hold your breath and gently push down like you are going to have a bowel movement while inserting the tampon.(Valsalva maneuver) to open the vagina easier.

Gently apply. : It’s a good idea to use the smallest size tampon when you are learning how for the first time. It is also easier to insert it when your period  is moderate to heavy as this allows the tampon to glide in more easily. 
If the tampon is inserted correctly, you should not feel it. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, you may have inserted it incorrectly or not in enough. Never force it in!

No: Vaseline is not water soluble and can trap bacteria. Don't use it internally. You can buy a vaginal lubricant over the counter. Look at the diagram on the package insert. Many young women think the vagina goes straight up but really when seated on a commode, point back just above your tailbone. It takes practice. Don't get frustrated.

First "blush": A first sexual encounter involving intercourse may produce a light pain and sometimes a spot or two of blood if the hymen is intact. If tampons have been used in the past then the hymen may already be "stretched" and will allow less painful penetration.  Above all, please use effective contraception.

See insertion video: When you first start using tampons you may find it easier to insert a “slim” tampon with a smooth plastic applicator that has a rounded tip. Recommend that you avoid super tampons with cardboard applicators when you first start. There are may u tube videos that provide instruction on proper tampon insertion. Change tampons roughly every 4 to 6 hours. Moms can usually give advice about tampon use.
