Interesting: Already answered this myself a number of hours ago and saw 2 other responses from other colleagues as well...but I'll take another shot at it for BONUS POINTS!  LOL.  This is a rare but well known possible risk with this type of surgery.  Intraoperative monitoring as well as careful surgical dissection avoids the complication.  Stated statistic is about 1/500 cases result in facial nerve problem.

Odd question: By definition a cholesteotoma originates from a space that involves the ear drum &amp; a cavity outside the protective coverings of the brain. Such an invasion can allow germs from outside the brain to enter the sensitive spaces covering the brain &amp; lead to meningitis or encephalitis. I have never dealt with such a case but would never consider differing surgery  if it involved me or my family.

Yes: Cholesteatoma refers to a growth pushing through areas of the ear drum & mastoid bone.  Sometimes there is fatty substance inside, sometimes it's just epithelial tissue (like mucous membrane tissue).  Surgery is the treatment if the cholesteatoma is causing difficulties, such as dizziness, pain, invading bone, or is chronically infected.

Eustachian tube may not work properly due to chronic ear or, sinus infections, colds,etc. Partial vacuum may be middle ear. This can cause a section of your eardrum to be pulled into the middle ear, creating a cyst, that grows larger.

: Cholesteotoma is colkection of abnormal skin cells growth in the middle ear.If left untreated it can cause damage to the structures in the ear and cause Hearing Loss which can be permanent.It can also cause infection in the ear canal which may need to be treated effectively as that can also cause hearing loss.Rarely infrction can spread upwards if left untreated for long time
