Type of food allergy: Oral allergy syndrome (oas) is a type of food allergy, with symptoms limited to the mouth and throat and prevented by cooking all food.  There are other types of food allergy, some of which cause gastrointestinal (stomach/bowel) problems such as diarrhea or pain, or a rash, or watery eyes/nose, or even swelling of the throat and/or other life-threatening problems like very low blood pressure.

Different: Food allergy refers to an ige mediated reaction to a food that could result in itchiness, hives, lip or tongue swelling, asthma and rarely death. Food intolerance is not ige mediated food allergy and could include lactose intolerance where one lacks the enzyme lactase that is needed to digests lactose -- the sugar in milk.

Allergies: Seasonal allergies usually consist of trees and grasses in the spring and ragweed in the summer. Food allergies Don't necessarily coexist with the seasonal allergies. Has the allergist tested you and tried treating your seasonal allergies with specific shots as well as medications?

Vice versa: Food allergy may induce symptoms similar to ibs but ibs does not lead to food allergy.  The best approach is avoidance of the offending foods and perhaps consult an allergist who can help you sort out whether your problem is from wheat allergy or gluten intolerance.

OAS: This is a disorder related to cross reactive proteins in the fresh or raw fruit of vegetables you eat. For example, fresh apple causes itch, tingle, and possible swelling in the mouth, but apple pie, apple sauce, apple crumble cause no symptoms. It is because you have seasonal pollen allergies. Think where the fruit or veggie grows and it can give you a clue to what pollens you are allergic to.
