is it safe to eat sushi (raw type) when i have large canker sores at the back of my throat.  no way to avoid the food touching the sores and one did a minor bleed but for a very short time.

Sushi: Sushi is raw. So probably not a good idea when you have open sores in mouth.

Tough to say: Going on the assumption you know you are not allergic to scaled fish, the problem with sushi is that it is made in the same place as sushi containing shellfish. It would be easy for there to be some "cross-contamination" of your "plain" sushi..And end up with shellfish in it..Eventhough you think it doesn't have any. Talk to your dr but it probably is best to avoid all sushi.

Yes, if it is: prepared properly. There can be worms in fish, but if the fish is frozen enough before processing and the food preparation is hygienic, there is not risk. The other issue to keep in mind is that some fish have more mercury than others and you need to check into the source of fish flesh and the type of fish. See this site for info on mercury.

Raw fish?: A person can eat sushi, but it is safer to eat other foods instead of sushi. One reason is the mercury in fish. A person who eats more than 2 servings of fish a week may be taking in more mercury. A second reason is that sushi ususally has uncooked seafood in it. Uncooked seafood can contain live viruses, bacteria, and parasites (larvae, worms); but fully cooking foods usually kills those things.

Yes: Consumption of undercooked seafood carries the risk of several diseases including hepatitis A. If you have chronic liver disease from hep b, then contracting hep A could be very dangerous. I would therefore recommend that you be vaccinated against hepatitis A to reduce your risk. It is a simple and effective series of 2 shots given 6 months apart.

There are several: Hopefully any restaurant would adequately prepare your food before serving it to you but you are right to think that raw meat, in this case fish is riskier than cooked food.  There are several parasites possible in raw fish.  One example is diphyllobothrium, a tapeworm that while treatable can cause nausea, weakness, diarrhea and others.

As another: As another doctor, dr gregory mosolf, put it:

"just be careful not to eat too much because fish such as tuna can contain mercury. Don't exceed 1 serving of tuna per week while nursing. Other fish which may have mercury include swordfish and salmon.".

If prepared right OK: If the sushi is prepared right by a trained chef it is Ok.  But like any food it has to be prepared and stored correctly.  You should be cautious who and where you get raw meats, that the chefs are reputable, and know how to prepare the sushi.
