Yes: There are conditions leading to jaundice (yellow skin) that are genetic, and therefore hereditary, but these are very uncommon. Most jaundice occurs due to normal processes in the newborn and is not hereditary, although depending on the mother's blood type the risk of jaundice in subsequent pregnancies may be increased.

Not sure: Where are they? Was there an injury at the site? Are they the only yellow sites or are you yellow elsewhere - i.e. Is it jaundice? Are they around the eye(s) or on the palsm - if s they may represent cholesterol deposits. You shudl be seen by someone who can make a determination - i suggest a dermatologist if your primary md isn't sure.

Physical exam: Although non-caucasians have skin pigmentation that darkens their skin, this is not usually evident within the first days of life, making it relatively easy to identify neonatal jaundice. However, even in pigmented individuals, jaundice (yellow skin) can be identified by careful examination of the mucus membranes, which should be pink in all individuals.

Discloration: A change in skin color either way is indicative of some abnormal condition.  Different tints of a darker yellow, may be thought of as brownish, but still may be caused by a liver dysfunction and be "jaundice.".

Maybe: The usual transitional jaundice of the newborn is gone within the first week or so. Persistence of mild jaundice is relatively common in some breast fed babies at 4 wks. However any significant jaundice at 4 wks should be evaluated. It can be from multiple worrisome problems that require medical treatment.

Depends on: Jaundice per se is not a contagious condition.  However,  the underlying cause such as  viral hepatitis is a contagious one.

See a doctor: Marks do not usually look like juandice. When the skin color tone and hue appear yellow that is usually indicative of jaundice.  If you are doing drugs, alcohol or having liver problems you need to be checked by a doctor.  Your bilirubin chemistry will measure this in detail and your doctor will order the liver tests necessary for this work up.

A few suggestions: Those would be two major causes but if there is a resolving hemorrhage, then sometimes the blood can go from red to yellow before disappearing. Alternatively, people with light freckles or normal pigmentation (from having dark skin) can have a yellowish looking eye, as well.
