Monitoring Centers: Lymphatic system absorbs/carries things too big to go into the arteries/veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. Lymph nodes "taste" the lymph for anything bad  like bacteria/viruses/cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts.  They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.  They shrink when all is well.

Lumps : Lumps in the neck can be normal anatomic structures: submandibular glands, carotid bulbs (normal bulbous area of the carotid artery just before it splits), cricoid cartilage of the larynx.  Other lumps can be abnormal: lymph nodes (about 75-80 per side, are normal but can get larger with inflammation/infection and some types of tumors), thyroid nodules, cysts.  This is something that should be evaluated by a doctor to ensure that it is not something concerning.  Most abnormal masses are inflammatory, but it is importent to rule out something that needs treatment or other evaluation.

A : A mass present for a month, located under the earlobe, and unresposive to antibiotics may very well be a parotid tumor ( the majority of which are benign). I would see an ENT physician who should be able to distinguish this for you, and most likely will be able to offer to you fine needle biopsy for tissue diagnosis. Please pursue having this checked out by a specialist

It : It is not entirely clear by your description of the location of the swelling, but there isn't a whole lot back there that could swell.  A pustule or boil or an enlarged lymph node are the most likely findings, the first being a skin lesion, the second being a secondary lesion.  The treatment for a pustule or boil would be warm soaks and drainage of the boil, with or without antibiotics, depending on the size and other conditions, such as other medical problems, symptoms (e.g. Fever).  However if it is a lymph node, the location could place it as an occipital lymph node, posterior auricular lymph node (more behind the ear), supraclavicular lymph node (tends to be more in the front of the next above the clavicle) or superior superficial cervical lymph nodes.  Next is to determine the pathology of why the lymph node is enlarged.  Lymph nodes are found throughout the body and normally are non-tender and relatively small.  During infections or invasion with cancer, the lymph nodes can enlarge.  It is important to distinguishing between localized and generalized lymphadenopathy is important in formulating a differential diagnosis.   Although the presence or absence of tenderness does not reliably differentiate benign from malignant nodes, clearly a non-tender enlarged lymph node is more concerning.  In addition, the size of the enlarged lymph node is important, those greater than 1 cm in diameter are considered to be abnormal.  A three- to four-week period of observation is prudent in patients with localized nodes and a benign clinical picture.

Causes of lymphadenopathy in this area include:
1) superior superficial cervical lymph nodes drain the scalp and neck, skin of arms and chest and enlargement may represent viral infections, tuberculosis, lymphoma or head and neck malignancy
2) occipital lymph nodes drain the scalp and head and enlargement usually represents a local infection, either bacterial or viral
3) posterior auricular lymph nodes drain the external ear and scalp and enlargement usually represents a local infection usually bacterial
4) supraclavicular nodes drain the chest and abdomen and enlargement is concerning for malignancy
5)  generalized adenopathy should always prompt further clinical investigation.

Lateral SCM presses: Side to side and front to back movements with weights will give you added muscle strength. Sit-ups, with your neck held up with also improve, besides doing exercises for the traps. However, overall conditioning and strengthening will add to these muscles as part of your preparation for sports or continuation in sports. Wear a helmet!

No: It is better to assume that this neck mass is unrelated to the accident.  You should have this checked by your physician or an ENT to determine if further work-up is needed.
