A few things: Theres a rare disorder called yellow nail syndrome, i've never seen a case of it and it is very rare and is usually associated with respiratory symotoms!  it could be due to smoking or a nutritional disorder.   If you have any other symtoms it would help to establish a firmer diagnosis.  However, my best guess is that you like to wear red nail polish, which is notorious for leaving nails yellow!

Yellow nails: There can be many causes. There can be various diseases which affect the liver, kidneys, or skin. Iron or zinc deficiencies can yellow the nails as well as overuse of nail polish.

Usually not: Usually in liver failure the whites of the eyes are the first to change color, but best checked with a simple lab test.  See your physician.

Need more info: Believe it or not your fingernails can sometimes give you an inside picture of your health. You need to make an appointment with a dermatologist who once he/she examines your nails can give you a good idea if something is wrong. Not having seen your nails I can't make a diagnosis.

Could be fungal: If the nails are discolored, thickened and deformed, there is a higher chance of the nail becoming infected by a fungus infection because the nail plate (the part we trim) is lifted from the underlying nail bed.   Have it checked by your pcp or seek help from a podiatrist who can recommend treatment options ranging from topical meds, oral meds, laser therapy or surgery.

Sounds like fungus: Keep in mind... The fda has recently come out with a blanket statement that toenail fungus can not be cured.  It is "managed" by a number of modalities, but it can always come back in the future.  See a podiatrist for a treatment that is best for you.

: Over the years of micro trauma to the little toe nail from your shoes. Not uncommon to develop a fungal- bacterial infection of your nail. It is difficult to resolve but not impossible. See a podiatrist for advice and treatment.

husband has bad fungus in toe nails.  thick, yellow/brown disconnected.  what can he do?  will vinegar soak help? consq of not treating?

Listen to body: Since your husband has multiple problems addressing them by lowering carbs and eating 6 meals of healthy foods more vegetables and high quality protein  will improve his ability to eliminate fungus and become healthy. Meanwhile topical vinegar soaks for 5 minutes every day before a shower can help control topical growth of fungus.
