how can i determine my abnormal liver function test results?

recently i had abnormal results on a liver function test. ast = 215 / alt = 135. drinking is the issue. i don't think i can stop cold turkey. will the liver still be able to heal if i cut back by say 95%? or is abstinence required for liver to heal?

: Cutting by 95% is better than current practice. You should try to quit alcohol entirely. Do not take acetaminophen (Tylenol). 
Alcohol is a poison that never did anybody any good, ever. It will destroy your brain cells, damage testicular cells that make testosterone, facilitate development of cancer in many organs, cause hepatitis, cirrhosis and pancreatitis etc. There is no safe level.

: Always need normal values for the tests.  Different in UK sometimes. Check meds you are taking by going to Drugs.com and look for liver effects. Also discuss with your Dr how much alcohol you drink a day or week. Cheers.

Liver functions: Large amounts of alcohol will cause a temporary rise in AST and ALT that usually resolves within a week of not drinking. If liver tests are still elevated, usually an ultrasound and blood tests for hepatitis are done.

Blood test abnormal: This usually refers to elevated liver enzymes (ast, alt or alkaline phosphatase).  There are numerous causes for elevated liver enzymes to include alcohol, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, liver tumors, medication toxicity and others.

Repeat tests after r: Dehydration should normally not affect the Liver Function tests. However, if you or your physician have any doubts, the tests should be repeated after taking care of dehydration.

It truly could.: If you drank enough to acutely inflame your liver, then those results would not be reflective of the health of your liver at baseline.  But, if you drink lots and often enough, your liver may not be doing to well anyway.

Get it worked up: Often something as simple as a mild allergy to ibuprofen can do this. Your physician can figure out the cause. If your're free of hepatitis B and C, hemochromatosis, autoimmune hepatitis, and antitrypsin deficiency, you may have one of the genetic fatty liver syndromes. They're not that problematic. While you're waiting, hit the aerobic fitness circuit hard -- your liver will be grateful.
