Autoimmune response: It is an autoimmune response against the hair that stops to from growing. Similar but not identical changes can occur in the skin, lungs, eye. There is no specific allergen in alopecia aerate.

Not specifically: Asthma and allergies are what are called atopic diseases which are hypersensitivity reactions in various parts of the body (asthma - lungs, allergies - mucosal membranes) due to various triggers like viruses, allergies, pollution, etc., whereas alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles for reasons that are not clear.

i have alopecia areata, when i first found out i had a patch on my head it was small.. but now it's huge! half of my head. what do i do?

See a dermatologist: There is no cure for alopecia areata. Hair often re-grows on its own. Treatment can help the hair re-grow more quickly. A dermatologist may give you corticosteroids, minoxidil, anthralin, diphencyprone (dpcp), and other treatments. Some treatments are combined, but if you would the hair to grow back faster i recommend seeing a dermatologist.

my son has a couple of very small (eraser size or smaller) bald patches. i first discovered them when he was 6 and i gave him a buzz cut. he is now almost 10. they havent changed in size at all over the years. is this a type of alopecia areata?

Yes: It could be. A biopsy must be taken to confirm the diagnosis, it consists on take a tiny sample of the skin to study it.

Alopecia areata: Aa is a hair disease caused by immune system attack of the hair follicle.  It is usually  treated by reducing inflammation in the area with topical medicines or injections.  It can also go away on its own. Don't think a specific diet will likely change it.
