Low salt intake: Salt hold on to water. If you have CKD with no or minimal compromise in renal function; mrs dash salt substitutes is a good alternative to using sodium chloride ( salt).

Edema: If your friend is accumulating water, she needs to speak to the oncologist directing the chemotherapy or her internist to see if diuretic therapy is appropriate in her case. I suspect that it may be needed and only a physician who examines her can make the decision to start her on Lasix (furosemide) or increase its dose. Good luck.

Fluid: It is true that fluid retention caused by hormonal changes in the week before the menstrual period commonly occurs, but I have never heard of that affecting the tongue. Careful salt restriction the week before your period is due may alleviate your symptom.

Not usually: in some instances, antihistamines and inhibit bladder emptying with back up of urine and kidney dysfunction. This can be serious, but it is rare and generally only occurs in susceptible individuals.  Otherwise, antihistamines generally don't cause fluid retention.  If steroids have been used, they can cause it.  Benadryl can also worsen cardiac or thyroid disease with an effect on fluid retention.

The answer is often diuretics ("water pills") but the cause will determine what kinds of diuretics or even a different treatment entirely. Definitely need to see your doc for this.
