Complicated: That depends entirely on the cause of the breathlessness. Common causes include lack of fitness, obesity, asthma, emphysema, pneumonia, congestive heart failure, blood clots, anemia, thyroid disease, acidosis from any cause, hyperventilation, broken rib, tumors, and on and on. This is the short list.

Possibly ER: If you are able to perform you activities of daily living you should make an appointment to see your internist asap, but if you are unable to do so or have difficulty speaking more than two or three word sentences then you should be seen in the er right away.

Radiographs: I would suggest having imaging studies performed, the use of Ibuprofen for muscular pain and seeing your PCP. The chest wall muscles and ribs are used during breathing, but your pain upon inhalation should be further evaluated.

Go to ER: Especially if this started very recently.. Important to rule out things like pneumonia or pulmonary embolism.

SLE: You definitely have to be re-evaluated by a rheumatologist.  SLE can affect the lungs and pleura which can cause shortness of breath. Hemolytic anemia is another  complication of SLE and if you are anemic you can also get shortness of breath.

Most likely : But some short and relatively cheap tests are in order if ur symptoms remain; and anxiety should be the last "rule-in" as the diagnostic choice. Would start with simple Chest X-ray and Pulmonary Function Test. Good luck

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor and discuss if you may be depressed. Counter-intuitive as it may seem, exercise may help. Start with low intensity exercise such as walking and gradually increase the intensity as tolerated.  Wish you good health!

Accepted Answer

Breathing: If you can find a quiet place - do so. Breath in slowly ; deeply through your nostrils. Fill your lungs with air (but not to the point of discomfort).  Hold for a count of five then slowly begin to exhale through an open mouth. Repeat at least 12 times, longer if you need to. If you haven't been assessed for your panic/ anxiety - that would be prudent. Take care.
