A type of bacteria: Staph=staphylococcus.2 groups of staph bacteria exist: s. Aureus (sa) & s. Non-aureus. Most serious staph infections are due to sa. 2 major groups of sa are deteremined by antibiotic resistance:mssa & mrsa. Mrsa is the resistant type of staph which may require special antibiotics. Most often sa infects: skin, lungs, blood, heart valves, bones & brain. 30% of us have sa on our nose or skin normally.

Culture: A bacterial culture would show if you have a staph infection and what antibiotic it is sensitive . A staph infection os swelling and heat. Pus around hair follicles, or any variation in between.

Yes, but: Most pharyngitis infections however are group a streptococcal, not staph.  That is in general.

MRSA: This is a bacterial strain of staphylococcus aureus which has developed resistance to antistaphylococcal penicillins and cephalosporins. Its appearance clinically will depend greatly on the area of the body infected, but not much different from strains sensitive to oxacillin/methicillin.

This is complicated: You may be colonized with staph in your nose, vagina, or bowel for years with no consequences. If  staph aureus get through your natural defenses then you can become very ill very quickly. Mild, smoldering symptoms are unlikely to be from staph aureus.

Yes: Some patients become colonized with MRSA and are at risk for recurrent infections. This can be overcome with a series of chlorhexidene gluconate cleansing treatments, mupiricin ointment  to the nares for a number of days and antibiotics as indicated. 2 negative cultures of the nares are felt to indicate the MRSA is resolved.

Staph vs staff: Staphylococcal organisms colonize the skin.  When they get 'under the skin' or enter the skin through breaks (cut, scratch, rash, burn) then the organisms set up shop and cause infection (tissue damage and the inflammation that follows).  Staph can be an ugly bug and then enter the blood stream and cause distant infections.
Some staff get under my skin...Those you have to ignore or just deal with!
