You really can't: Taking an antiviral medication daily lowers your risk of shedding the virus to 1 in 365 days but even then you wouldn't know when that day would be. Wearing a condom reduces transmission as well.

Viral shedding: Viral shedding with herpes can occur from any open lesion and is not related to how long you have had the virus. There are many herbs that increase immunity which in turn can decrease the frequency of outbreaks. Most men will clearly know if they have an outbreak, but women can have internal outbreaks for which they are not aware.

Herpes: Herpes is a common problem.  It is possible to transmit virus even without lesions--it is called aysmptomatic viral shedding.  Avoidance should be used and may reduce transmission, but not to 0--since not all areas are covered or protected. Consult your doc  for any specific concerns or for treatment.

Yes: It is true that one sheds the virus prior to an outbreak.  Theoretically..Yes..You may infect another person.

: Shedding does occur and typically lasts at least 15 days or longer from the first tingle. To prevent cold sores, valacyclovir or another antiviral drug, acyclovir, can be taken daily. This reduces the chance of a cold sore coming back by about one-third. It could also help if you avoid triggers, such as exposure to sun or wind, that can activate the cold sore virus.  Meds also help with shedding.

Accepted Answer

Probably not.: It's possible (almost anything is possible), but highly unlikely. You didn't describe what you have on your foot that led you to believe that it's herpes. Consult a dermatologist and find out what is going on.

Not practical...: If neither the patient nor the doctor can guess when the patient is shedding (on which, if any, of the 365 days of the year is the patient shedding?), it is not practical to try to catch shed viruses, if the patient doesn't have outbreaks.  What if the patient has had both herpes 1 and 2, but rarely sheds either?  Such things in real life are not predictable.

i'm not sure if i'm having a second outbreak of herpes. i was recently (may 2017) diagnosed with herpes and i'd also like to know if my acyclovir will prevent future shedding?

It is possible: It is possible to get recurrence of Herpes Simplex.And yes acyclovir or another anti viral antibiotic daily will prevent future viral shedding,Consult your Doctor

my daughter has eczema. how careful do i need to be with my herpes to not give her eczema herpeticum? including when potentially shedding.? paranoid!

Very difficult: I would recommend be vigilant to watch for suspicious rash over the preexisting skin lesion associated with high fever.  Seek a medical attention right away.
