It is a deformity of: The spine and there are several different types or categories with it appearing that the spine is curved &/or twisted.  The categories are defined by the causes &/or age of onset.  The typical one in teenage years is idiopathic scoliosis.  This is best assessed by seeing your physician.

The need for treatment of scoliosis depends on the age of the patient(skeletal maturity), degree of curvature of the spine and risk of progression of the curvature. The choice of treatments includes observation, bracing, and surgery. Treatment decisions should be made by a physician experienced in the treatment of scoliosis.

Scoliosis: Hello. Many patients have the incidental finding of scoliosis on x-rays. Fortunately just because scoliosis may be seen, it does not mean that a patient will experience pain because of it. Most curves are mild. For those that are NOT mild, seeing a scoliosis spine specialist is in order to prevent other issues- especially to the lungs over time.

Depends: First, scoliosis is not a typical cause for back pain unless it involves the lower back or if it a larger curve.  However, a scoliosis can be a secondary type caused as a response from a pain source like a disc herniation or infection. If pain persists, get  checked.

We don't know: We do not know why adolescent (idiopathic) scoliosis occurs.  This form of scoliosis develops as adolescents as has the highest chance of progressing while we are in our skeletally immature age, teenage years.  It is best to see a physician to evaluate the severity of the curve and determine the best treatment to avoid progression.
