Genes and hard work: It helps to be genetically blessed with a good physique. After that, eating a well balanced diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains; low in saturated fats; no tobacco; no more than one drink a day; regular exercise. Not an easy task.

It depends: Drugs or supplements taken orally will first be exposed to digestive enzymes, then the highly acidic conditions in the stomach. As they are absrobed through the digestive tract, they go through the liver which further processes them. The upshot is that they may not ever reach significant levels in other parts of the body, and not necessarily in the same form.

A number of them: Toxoplasmosis and cat scratch disease from cat, Salmonella infection from turtle, are well known examples.

Furry friends: Studies indicate that pets may be good for our health. The more attached a person is to their pet, the more beneficial the pet appears to be. Research on dog ownership shows that blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides tend to be lower in pet owners. An added benefit is that people with dogs often exercise more. Studies on cats are just beginning, but results, so far, are similar.
