Bad Trouble!: Pancreatitis is known as one of the most painful conditions.  The name refers to a state of inflammation of the pancreas.  The common causes or viral infection, alcohol irritation, triglyceride irritation, and infrequently from a bile stone.  Another common cause is simply "unknown" or idiopathic in medical jargon.  Treatment is usually pain meds, antibiotics and IV fluids.  Nothing by mouth.

Inflammation : It is inflammation of the pancreas. The most common causes are alcohol use and gallstones. Some medicines can cause it.  It can be mild or severe.  Sometimes the pancreas will start to digest itself.

Can mean different: Things to different persons. Some docs refer to a chemical pancreatitis as an abnormal elevation in serum pancreatic enzyme testing(amylase/lipase) without clinical signs like nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain(clinical pancreatitis).  Some doctors refer to a chemic pancreatitis as pancreatitis that is due to a chemical exposure.  I've seen it used both ways.

Chronic pancreatitis: Chronic pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas that does not heal or improve.  This inflammation can cause damage to the pancreas causing it to not work properly.  People with chronic pancreatitis can have chronic abdominal pain and should eat a diet low in fat.  They should also consider taking pancreatic enzyme supplements (if recommended by a physician).

Chronic Pancreatitis: This is chronic inflammation of the pancreas resulting in abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, elevated liver functions and usually normal pancreatic enzymes. A lot of people get it after gallbladder surgery. Those who have it in my experience have multiple episodes of the above symptoms sometimes requiring hospitalization. Coordinated treatment between PCP and GI is needed.

Temporary vs.: Permanent damage.  Both are mostly due to alcohol abuse and gall stones.  Acute pancreatitis may resolve without permanent damage to the organ, whereas chronic pancreatitis by definition is diagnosed when there is permanent damage to the organ.

Scarring in panc: Chronic inflammation of pancres (digestive and endocrine organ), generally as a consequence of chronic alcohol use. Can cause chronic pain (usually worse after eating); maldigestion of (primarily) fats, with foul smelling, greasy stool, weight loss;  maldigestion of carbohydrates and protein; diabetes that may be poorly controllable. Can be treated with meds, occ surgery.

what is the difference between pancreatitis and gastritis as far as symptoms?

See below: The symptoms of pancreatitis and gastritis can be very similar. They both cause pain in the epigastric region which is often made worse by food. Pancreatitis pain tends to radiate to the back, and tends to be more severe. If you think you may have either, see your doctor, as there are specific tests and treatments for both. In the meantime, avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeine. Hope this helps!
