Poor nerve function: Nerve disease or damage causing improper nerve function. Can be caused by diabetes, chemicals/toxins, medication, radiation, physical injury, lack of blood supply & some bacteria. Nerves control all body processes so symptoms vary depending on what type of nerve is affected. Symptoms may be: numbness, pain, coldness, tingling, increased sensitivity, weakness, imbalance, dry skin, & poor healing.

General term: Neuropathy is a general term for "nerve damage".  There can be literally hundreds of causes.  Doctors will screen you for common causes such as diabetes and vitamin deficiencies but once common causes are ruled out, you then require a more advanced work up.  About 30% of individuals (depending on which medical literature one reads) never find a reason for their neuropathy.

Nerve damage: Neuropathy essentially means that there is damage to the nerve and it could be from many causes.  It could affect sensory nerves resulting in burning type sensation.  Your husbands symptoms may be from neuropathy but he should be seen to exclude other reasons for those kinds of symptoms.  Hope he feels better!

Swelling : Swelling and water retention are not usual symptoms of neuropathy.  These problems are serious enough to need evaluation right away.  A same day appointment at a primary care provider (internal medicine, family practice or urgent care) or a visit to the emergency department would be a good idea.

Taking vitamin supplements can also help especially folate, thiamine, b12, b6 and vitamin e.

Radial neuropathy: The radial nerve travels across the back of the humerus (upper arm bone) and supplies the brachioradialis muscle and the skin sensation to the back of the hand (among other things).  The muscle helps you turn a doorknob clockwise with your right hand (CCW with the left).  Radial neuropathy often occurs when we lean our arm over the back of a chair and fall asleep.  It also causes a "wrist drop".
