why do some women have  such negative mood changes during a monthly period?

Multivariable: For some, the drop in estrogen effects neurons in the brain, making them retract.  For many it is the exacerbation of an already underlying mood problem.  The main symptom in 93 % of women is fatigue.  A birth control pill may help.  If you have regular insomnia, headaches from teeth clinching, etc, medication for anxiety can be helpful.  Cymbalta (duloxetine) at 30 mg is a good place to start if insured.

Moody Anxiety: If your period has changed (and you are having sex) think pregnancy which can also make you feel moody and tired. Get a pregancy test if this is the case.

Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.

Can do a preg. test: It can be hard to tell if a woman is pregnant because some of the symptoms seen in early pregnancy can also happen in non-pregnant women.  A urine pregnancy test gives a reliable result if done correctly.  One can test about 3 weeks after sex (when conception might have occurred), or 1 week after missing a period.  An ob-gyn doctor can evaluate any persistent or worrisome symptoms.
