Time travel: Jet lag is any time travel but it is usually most pronounced e-w.  You've lost time.  Also body is not able to sleep as late in morning because it feels like it is later, so people get up earlier than they would.

Clocks out of synch: Jet lag is a mismatch between your internal clock and the external world.  This happens when you travel east or west (less so with westbouond travel)  often you will feel fatigued, have poor appetite and may have trouble sleeping. Sunlight and melatonin set your internal clock. To treat it get out into the sunlight, eat at regular times, and take melatonin if you have trouble falling asleep.

Travel East or West: Jet lag is caused by a mismatch between your internal clock and the external world. Your internal clock is set and reset every day by sunlight and melatoinin.  To combat the fatigue, malaise, and nausea which go along with jet lag try to reset your internal clock: get out into the daylight in the morining and evening. You can use melatonin (available over the counter) before bedtime too.

Various factors: It depends on your direction of flight, and how many time zones you will cross.  If only 1-2 time zones, you will probably be okay, but if 3 or more going east, you will need equilibration.  You can help yourself by drinking water, moving around on the plane, staying away from alcohol & caffeine, and adapt to new time zone by being in sunshine.  Can use melatonin .3 to 3 mg when you want to sleep.

Time Zone traveled: Depending on number of time zone traveled. Traveling from ny to la in usa is 3 time zone and about 3 days it last. Traveling west is less taxing to body then traveling east.  Generally jet lag takes one day per time zone traveled. Same time zone travel from north to south has no effect on body like ny to orlando.
