Herpes: If you have herpes 1 and 2 you should have two test results, not just one. If there is one then something is wrong and it is impossible to guess which of these are truly positive.  I need more information.

HSV?: Are you sure you're not talking about hcv?  There's nothing new that i'm aware of for hsv, and little reason for new drugs.  The drugs available now (valacyclovir, acyclovir, and famciclovir) are generic, cheap, safe, well tolerated, and effective.

Let me explain: Cold sores (fever blisters) are small, painful, fluid-filled blisters that occur on the lips, mouth, nose, chin, cheeks, and throat. They are most commonly caused by the herpes simplex type 1 virus (hsv-1).


Less often, however, they can be caused by herpes simplex type 2 (hsv-2), the virus that most often causes genital herpes.

2 Versions of Virus: Both are herpes simplex virus.1 is normally in oral area & 2 in genitals but either can be found either place. Most people have been exposed to hsv1 early in life and have very few problems other than occasional cold sores. Hsv1 in the gential area tends to be more painful than in oral area because that area is more sensitive in general. Meds can help treat/prevent both 1&2 in either area.

HSV I and II: HSV I and II can share cross antigenicity, so if you are positive with HSV I,  the IgM for a "new" case of potentially "HSV II" can be confused with a recurrence of HSV I.  The communicability of HSV's is extreme, so exposure will have produced a positive IgM if you have been exposed and the virus was present by 32 days, even without visible or painful lesions in your partner.

Not fatal: Although anxiety provoking and no one wishes for it,  hsv-1/herpes virus is not a fatal disease unless one is quite sickly or immunosuppressed.

my sister gets cold sores. i have never had one.  i know during pregnancy tests, they test for immunity to certain things.  do you know what hsv test is done during pregnancy? didn't know if that test can tell if i'll get a cold sore some day. thanks?

Not usually: Immunity to HSV is not a routine test in pregnancy or otherwise. It is likely that you have been exposed to oral herpes and it is generally a silent issue. You could ask you doctor for a test, but there is no vaccine and you would not be doing anything different.
Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco .

Herpes un-curable: Nope.  Not at this time. But the infection can be suppressed by medications if there is any risk of contagiousness or recurring outbreaks and sores.

No: Hsv transmission requires direct contact of mucus membrane to mucus membrane, either oral or genital.
