Possible Sleep Annea: This is a frightening thing to witness and should be investigated.  Sleep apnea is a disorder where for various reasons a person stops breathing breifly when asleep.  Associated with many complications.  In my opinion, seeing a doctor certified in sleep medicine is the best bet, but many primary care doctors care for patients with this kind of problem.

Seek professional dr: seek someone who is sleep medicine boarded or has a detailed sleep medicine practice (not just someone who runs a sleep study center, although lots of docs who participate in this do have this background)

Anxiety issues?: The pattern of symptoms &amp; the timing does not seem to make sense with any organic condition that I am aware of. Sleep paralysis should not cause pain. I think there's some type of phobia or irrational / subconscious fear leading to bedtime anxiety. I think you should see a counselor or at least talk to someone who you are close to about your problems. Do you have a family doctor or use HT Prime?

Nose blocked: You may be experiencing a partisan blockage of air flow.  Could be partial obstructive sleep apnea or just partial nasal obstruction.   Speak to your doctor about your symptoms.

Sleep apnea: Stopping breathing while sleeping is almost invariably caused by sleep apnea. Other causes would be things like stroke or seizure (which could potentially be life threatening). If you have concerns, see a pulmonologist and get a sleep study.

Specialist: I suggest a board certified pulmonologist and formal sleep studies and a medical workup, including a routine chest x-ray; however the sleep study is the gold standard to make the diagnosis.

Sleep left side: I assume you're referring to discomfort in the left rib cage and not your shoulder or arm. If you don't have any breathing problems or chest discomfort when you're active and exercising, I suspect that you're focussing too much on your breathing which is an automatic process controlled by the brain stem. Thinking about it can cause awkward feelings. An MD can examine your chest &amp; rib cage &amp;advise

Not common: The question is;  what kind of testing is being done to determine that you are not breathing during sleep "once a month?"  is this by your significant other?  I agree with other doctors- see a sleep specialist.  May be an underlying disease or problem unrelated to sa.
