Bad eyesight: Decreased night vision is simply that. It can be from uncorrected refractive error to unknown eye disease to problems in the brain or even vitamin deficiencies.

Yes: Besides affecting your visual acuity, cataracts can also cause a halo effect around light sources making it difficult to see in low light conditions such as when driving. Your ophthalmologist can assist you in deciding when it's appropriate to remove your cataracts and replace your intraocular lens. It's a very common & low risk procedure, typically performed as an outpatient.

Comparison: If you think you have difficulty at night, and are not embarrassed to ask, then compare your recovery when entering a dark place from the light with a friend who can tell you when he recovers versus your recovery time. Depends: For individuals with normal retinal function, there is, unfortunately, no way to develop superhero grade night vision.  Conversely, for patients with decreased night vision or “nyctalopia”, as a result of dietary vitamin a deficiency, vitamin a supplementation will hopefully restore normal human grade night vision.  Patients with degenerative conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, unfortunately, lose night vision and peripheral vision from progressive photoreceptor loss.  Patients with congenital stationary night blindness, cone/rod dystrophies and other degenerative disorders also have photoreceptor loss with loss of night vision.  Although until now there hasn’t been much to offer these patients, research is currently underway investigating a large array of agents which may offer them some hope for the future.

Depends: The basis for this "old wive's tale" is that, accurately, carrots as well as other yellow/orange vegetables and gourds (squash, pumpkin) are fantastic sources of vitamin a, an essential vitamin required for photoreceptor (cone/rod) metabolism.  While severe vitamin a deficiency may lead to serious, but generally reversible, vision problems, such as night blindness, most people in developed countries meet more than their daily vitamin a requirements from normal diets and there is no need to consume exorbitant amounts of carrots.  In fact, vitamin a excess may be toxic to the liver and some clinical studies have demonstrated that excess vitamin a metabolites may actually be potentially toxic to photoreceptors.

Poor night vision: Poor night vision means vision is worse than 20/40  under night time conditions or with glare from oncoming cars. Most common cause is a cataract, dry eyes. Rods are for night: Cones detect color, and work best in bright light. The rods are the cells of the retina that function at night, allowing you so see better in dim light conditions.

Eye strain: At age 43, you may have some eye strain from presbyopia, the decrease in ability to focus up close that comes with aging. It normally starts in the 40s. If you do have eye strain, dim light conditions may make it worse. See your eye MD to confirm and possibly start using reading glasses.
