Blepharitis: Crusting of the eyelids are usually called blepharitis.  This is usually an infection of the eyelids that cause the lids to be thickened and red with  debris on the eyelashes.  Lid scrubs and warm compressed are used to help resolve this issue.  At times you may also need an antibiotic cream or by mouth

Several things: Problems like these can only be correctly handled by your doctor in person.  He/she needs to listen to you, perform an examination and possibly run labs or other tests. That's the only way he/she can find out what's going on and what to do about it.

The eyes ; a cold: You can definitely have a secondary eye infection caused by the same virus that causes a cold.  This would cause crusting and swelling of your eyelids.  Typically, the eye infection will improve when the cold gets better.  Keep your eyelids clean to help reduce the symptoms.

Blepharitis: Eyelid margin disease is a common and chronic condition caused by inflammation of the eyelids referred to as blepharitis or meibomitis.  This condition frequently occurs in people who have a tendency toward oily skin, dandruff or dry eyes.  Swollen or red eyelids; burning, stinging, or itchy eyelids; blurry vision that comes and goes; scales or skin flakes at the bottom of the eyelashes; "sleep.".

Blepharitis: It appears severe. Treatment is topical antibiotic ointment on lashes and lids at bedtime. Lid scrubs in the morning.

Accepted Answer

Warm compresses: Warm compresses (wash cloth with hot water and hold it on the eyelids  for 5-10 minutes, reheating as needed). Do this in the morning when you wake and at night before you go to bed. Use the wash cloth to scrub the base of the eye lashes after you do the compresses. Use artificial tears during the day.  Start oral omega 3s. Most likely due to inflammation from dry eyes and mebomianitis.

Blepharitis: Blepharitis, sometimes referred to as dandruff of the eyelashes.  I have many patient that have problems with baby shampoo scrubs.  I recommend ocusoft lid scrubs.  If this does not take care of it, then you may need an antibiotic and possibly steroid drop or combination to treat the condition.  Oral omega 3's can help the health of the eyelid margin as well.

?infectious: See a dr...It sounds like you may have an eye infection. (conjuctivitis or blepharitis).

Conjunctivitis: Given the fact eye infection associated with upper respiratory infection, viral conjunctivitis is suspected.  However, since ear infection is also  found not infrequently in this circumstance,  I would recommend her be checked by her primary care provider.
