Crepitus = creaking: Crepitus be referred to 2 kinds of descriptive term during examination:  1) a sound heard during movement and/or 2) the palpable sensation of "lack of smoothness in the joint" noted by the examiner during range of motion testing in the ankle.  It can be from the bones in the ankle rubbing.  It can be from swelling.  It can be due to offset in the position of the joint.

Crepitus: Crepitus is a sound, not a diagnosis.  This sound description can apply to noises from the joints, tendons, skin, lungs, etc.  Hence, it depends on where the crepitus originates.  If unsure, start with your primary care provider.

Popping or grating: Crepitus is the sound or sensation of grating, crackling or popping in the knee, ankle, spine, or other joint.  Some people have joints that naturally crack or pop. For them, this is normal.  Other people don't experience this until they have an injury or other problem causing joint inflammation.  It can be caused by an irregularity of the joint surface or excess fluid in the joint.

Crepitus: Crepitus is just a term to describe a physical exam finding of bones or joints that are "noisy" when manipulated or palpated. Crepitus is not necessarily associated with a condition that warrants treatment, or can be treated.

i'm having crepitus and grinding over my shoulder blades over a year now. i never had injury, had pt but didn't work. what is it?

Arthritis: The presence of crepitus and grinding in a joint such as a shoulder is usually indicative of arthritis.  There may also be some ligimant damage as well.  A MRI would provide more information.  Generally PT will help with strength and range of montion, but when PT fails the usual last resort is surgery.

It depends: If it does not cause pain no treatment is needed and it has no significance. If it is associated with pain, then it may indicate an arthritic process. See a doctor and have the knee x rayed in this case.
